Understanding Bolt Grades and Head Markings
Head markings tell you much more than brand identity. They also help confirm strength class and traceability.

Bolt head markings are one of the quickest ways to identify whether a fastener matches the expected specification. Depending on the standard system, the marks may show the manufacturer, the property class, the grade, or other traceability details.
For maintenance teams and incoming inspectors, learning to read those marks is a practical skill. It helps catch mixed stock before incorrect hardware reaches the line or the field.
What The Markings Usually Indicate
- Manufacturer identity for traceability.
- Mechanical property class or grade.
- Sometimes special marks for application-specific standards.
Markings Are A Check, Not The Whole Verification
A head mark can confirm that a part appears to match the intended grade, but it is not a substitute for documentation and process control. Mixed lots, counterfeits, and incorrect plating can still create risk even when the marking looks familiar.
The best practice is to combine head-mark review with packaging control, supplier qualification, and test documentation. That creates a much stronger quality screen than visual identification alone.
